The Victims and the Past project team are proud to announce that our guidelines on media engagement were launched at Queen’s University Belfast on 5 March 2019. Following extensive consultation with victims and survivors and journalists and editors, two sets of guidelines – one for victims and survivors on media engagement and one for journalists, editors and educators on how to engage with victims and survivors and report on legacy issues – were produced. Journalist and documentarian, John Ware, recently gave the keynote speech at a postgraduate conference at Queen’s University Belfast. The conference was organised by the Mitchell Institute’s Doctoral Research Group and provided an opportunity for postgraduates from QUB and beyond to present their research. Read the rest

On 15th June 2017, Dr Cheryl Lawther and Dr Lauren Dempster joined Seamus Breslin of Friends of Derry City Cemetery for a tour of the cemetery. The graves visited on this fascinating tour covered Derry’s history from the cemetery’s opening in the mid-19th century to the present day. Read the rest

On 15th June 2017, Dr Cheryl Lawther and Dr Lauren Dempster participated in a Bogside History Tour, joining a public tour led by Paul Doherty. The tour began in Derry’s Guildhall, where the group was provided with an account of the Widgery and Saville Inquiries, and the lengthy campaign for truth by family and friends of those killed on Bloody Sunday. On 13 March 2017, Dr. Cheryl Lawther was invited to participate in a Belfast City Centre walking tour with local company Dead Centre Tours.   This educational tour began at Belfast City Hall, crossing the city through the Cathedral Quarter and finishing up by the Waterfront Hall. Read the rest

On 28 February 2017, Dr. Cheryl Lawther presented an invited paper on ‘Policing the Past: A Pro-State Perspective’ at the School of Law, University of Warwick. Drawing on her empirical work, this paper considered attitudes to dealing with the past amongst members of the security forces. Read the rest

On 25th January 2017, Dr Cheryl Lawther and Dr Lauren Dempster participated in a walking tour of the Ballymurphy area of west Belfast with a tour guide from the former political prisoners’ organisation, Coiste na n-larchimí. Read the rest

Dr Cheryl Lawther and Dr Lauren Dempster participated in a border trail tour run by SEFF on 5th December 2016. This tour provided a fascinating insight into the nature of the conflict in the Fermanagh and border area. Read the rest

The project team met a guide from the former political prisoners’ organisation, Coiste na n-larchimí, for a tour of Belfast’s Milltown cemetery on 19th January 2017. The tour guide told the team some of the history of the cemetery and guided them around a number of graves and memorials, detailing the stories of those interred at the cemetery going back many generations. The project team visited the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) George Cross (GC) Memorial Garden in Belfast on 10th November 2016. An RUC GC volunteer took the team on a tour of the garden, which contains a number of sculptures commemorating various aspects of the RUC’s history and a series of information boards detailing the history of policing in Northern Ireland. Dr Cheryl Lawther has been invited to speak at the University of Warwick on 25 November on ‘Emotions and the moral grammar of transitional justice’. Drawing on her expertise on dealing with the past and truth recovery, her paper will consider the role of emotions, specifically loyalty on ex-combatants attitudes to dealing with the past. Dr Cheryl Lawther will be based at the University of Wyoming as a Simpson Visiting Scholar between 30 October and 8 November. While in Wyoming, she will deliver a number of classes on transitional justice in Northern Ireland to undergraduate students in the Department of Political Science. Read the rest
