The Victims and Dealing with the Past project team are delighted to announce that we will be hosting a major conference on ‘Victimhood and Dealing with the Past’. The conference will be held on 14 May 2018, at Riddel Hall, Queen’s University Belfast.
Reflecting on our work in Northern Ireland, the conference will look at some of the most pressing issues regarding legacy. Throughout the day, local and international speakers will consider a range of issues, including compromise after conflict, victim agency and involvement in the Colombian peace process, the creation of transitional justice ‘entrepreneurs’ in South Africa and issues related to historical investigations, prosecutions and the legacy provisions contained in the Stormont House Agreement. The day will conclude with the presentation of two sets of draft guidelines – one on how best victims and survivors can engage with the media in Northern Ireland and one on how best journalists and other media professionals can ethically represent legacy issues – a topic of increasing importance given any consultation on, and establishment of, the Stormont House Agreement.
